Štefánik Observatory
The Štefánik Observatory was built in 1928 on Petřín Hill near the 14th century Hunger Wall. The Štefánik Observatory, which focuses on popularizing astronomy and related natural sciences gained its current look during an extensive reconstruction in the 1970s. All year round the observatory offers public daytime and nighttime sky watching, in addition to a tour of its equipment and a permanent exhibition covering the basics of astronomy. Popularized lectures on astronomical and astronautical topics take place here, and the observatory also prepares educational school programs for children of all ages. Visitors can observe the sky through a telescope anytime during opening hours when the weather is clear - in the daytime, observation focuses on the sun while after dusk attention shifts to the moon and the other visible planets of the solar system. Observation is accompanied by an expert explanation. The observatory is open daily except for Mondays, and from April till August the opening hours are extended till 11 p.m. Be sure to check the website for up to date opening hours by season.
