Valdštejnská Pub | Haunt of the Obese Merchant

The Obese Merchant

If you so happen to be in Lesser Town and spot a very large, round man - do not fret for it is only Prague’s friendly Obese Merchant ghost! In life the Merchant was an extremely gluttonous man who ate until his heart’s content even when his fellow countrymen were starving around him during difficult times. His appearance in life was very unattractive as he had the largest belly ever seen in the land of Bohemia, however the Obese Mechant did not care. He loved only food, not gold nor priceless treasures, only food. One evening he rolled into his favorite pub, the Valdštejnská pub (next to the current day Senate building in Mala Strana), grunting and huffing and puffing, hungry for loads of food. In one setting the Obese Merchant ate two roasted geese and one large turkey with numerous dumplings and washed it all down with twenty pints of wine. His stomach rumbled and grumbled and the fat man was finally satisfied (until the next meal). It was at this point that a starving beggar limped into the pub and begged and pleaded for a piece of the fat man’s remaining bread. The Obese Merchant laughed and scolded the beggar and refused to share his bread with him. It was at this moment in time that the beggar hated the fat man and wished and prayed for the obese jerk to explode in the pub. And that is exactly what happened to the fat man; death by explosion for not sharing a piece of bread. The Obese Merchant now haunts the area of Lesser Town feeling sorry for himself and his trapped overweight soul. Only if a friendly homeless person would feel sorry for him too, then the Obese Merchant could be freed. The homeless person must shed a tear for the fat man and offer him a piece of bread.

You can find the Obese Merchant around Valdštejnská Hospoda: Tomášská 20/16, Praha 1.
