Jiřího z Poděbrad Farmers Market

Located in the manicured square just above Jiřího z Poděbrad metro, and in front of the unique and famous Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord and just outside of the local primary school, you will find a treasure of Czech life the Farmers Market! Selling everything from potatoes freshly dug up, cheese and fresh milk products, newly-baked traditional goodies such as kolacky or babovka, to free-range eggs and chicken, organic beef, fish, pork, or sometimes even ostrich meat or turkey, to a wide array of seasonal vegetables, herbs, and plants- even including household plants or geraniums to jazz-up your window or balcony, this local farmers market offers a huge range of goods for its size, and is a great way to get to know Czech food culture even better, or find some excellent imports such as Hungarian specialties like klobasa and paprika, Spanish olive oils, hot Balkan food to eat on the spot, or the freshest of fish from Croatia located just opposite the traditional freshwater fish stand selling Czech pond or river-sourced fish. Introduce or re-introduce yourself to the best of traditional Czech foods, mostly hailing from the regions immediately surrounding Prague, or to local wines, or even – if you're feeling brave or nostalgic – some traditional tlacenka (headcheese) made just the way Dědeček (Grandpa) used to make it. The sellers often rotate locations on a weekly or daily basis between other markets, so you'll always find something new or be happy to see an old favorite, and its fun for all ages at the farmers market, with food or beverage tastings and a chance to learn about the food you eat. Feel free to speak with the sellers about the food, they are a wealth of knowledge and will be happy to share further information with you about how and where the food is produced. They are also usually happy to take special orders, such as a turkey just in time for Thanksgiving or Christmas, or a special variety of sausages for your big summer bbq. With special events featuring live music on Saturdays, entertainment and contests for kids, loads of variety, and pretty reasonable prices, there is simply no reason not to visit the Farmers Market at náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. The Jiřího z Poděbrad Farmers Market runs each Saturday from about 8:00am – 2:00pm from January 21st until Carnival at the end of February, then adds Wednesdays 8:00am – 6:00pm to the schedule, and this year has also seen the very welcome addition of Fridays 8:00am – 6:00pm to the line-up. The Farmers Market usually finishes for the year when the traditional Jiriho z Podebrad Christmas Market starts in December.
