Protivín Crocodile Zoo

If you prefer predatory animals and reptiles, then you will certainly love the Protivín Crocodile Zoo located close to Písek in southern Bohemia. Miroslav Procházka officially established the Protivín Crocodile Zoo, located in a historical farm building, in May 2008 on the basis of private breeding, and it was completed in 2012. Besides about twenty species of crocodiles, caymans and alligators you can also see a turtle, monitor lizards, gharial and other animals. The zoo breeds especially endangered and critically endangered species. Raising, isolating and quarantine vivaria are located on the close Chvalšiny Crocodile Farm, where the first homozygous Cuban crocodile rearing in Europe was recorded. Educational, academic and scientific activities of the zoo are fulfilled mainly by the zoological museum which was created together with the zoo. Its collection of skulls, whole skeletons and other osteological objects now contains more than 1,200 exhibits, many of which are complete systematic groups of vertebrates, such as big cats, bears, elephants, rhinoceroses and more. Only a fraction of the collection is currently exhibited at the zoo. The Protivín Crocodile Zoo is also engaged in the ever-important job of environmental protection in the Czech Republic.
